2011 Boys Varsity Volleyball Season: Reflection

Our 2011 Boys Varsity Volleyball Season ended on Saturday,October 8, once the volleyball dropped right on floor. I must say with pride that this team is the best team that Brent Subic has ever ever had. We showed not just how we played volleyball but also played as one "classy", "righteous", "determined", and "proud" team. I believe we did not come short of our coaches expectation, our performance in this 2011 ISAC volleyball tournament was amazing and exceptional. I am proud to say that yes, we are the 2nd place, Brent Subic Volleyball Team.
These past 4 days have been the biggest learning experience for me as a player, as an individual and as well as for the team. We gave our best in every game, without doubt gave the best sportsmanship in the whole tournament. And although in the finals we lost by just 2 points, we gave the audience a HELL OF A GAME. Little errors we made caused the game, but despite this we lost this game like champions, heads high, with the crowd cheering for our team and gave thanks to other team for a wonderful game. For us seniors, me, Armand and Jack, that finals game was our last game we will ever play for Brent Subic! So after warm-up i called the team together without our coach, and we talked, and i said to them "this is the best team ever! I hate it when we give up and back out, because this game is ours!" I teared up, realizing that this was going to be our last game together. The non-seniors wanted to win it for us, and us seniors wanted to win it for our BEST coach ever, Coach T. His pep talks to us, i will never forget, telling us never lose control, never give up and lose with your heads high. When the game was over he pulled us over and talked to us, he was not mad at all! he had a smile on his face saying we played the best and most amazing game, and i could not look at him in the eye because the smile on his face made me tear up. Everyone could see that he loves and cares for every single one of us on the team, scolded us when we needed scolding, cheered us up when we needed comfort, gave us confident when we needed it and all this got the team where we are now.
The happiest thing for me was, after struggling through the season, fighting, throwing tantrums, blaming each other, not working as a team, in the end we finished the season with NONE of this, and to me the growth in the team is what matters. In my heart we are the true champions, no one can take defeat the same way we do. Brent Subic is the best team, we dont need a first place trophy tell us that! It was a wonderful season, thanks teammates, and THANK YOU COACH!

LAST WEEK!

Its the last week of official practices until our final tournament, ISAC at Brent Manila. These past 2 weeks I can see great great improvement in our team, whether it is floor coverage, spiking, or even serving, main thing now is to maintain it, and keep it consistent. This weekend we had our last LSMS trip to brent manila, we played both very strong teams, the Brent APAC team and this other blue team that beat the APAC team last week. The first game with the blue team, we played the most consistent game we ever played the whole season, was aggressive by the net and moving on the floor, receiving really well even with their strong offense. Although we did not take any sets, but we played with them and caused them to struggle and was at some point of the game leading. No matter losing or winning, i learned that as long as we play our game, we're going to have fun, and mostly especially for our team because we are capable of so much better. After our first game we had 3 hours to relax, we were officially out of the tournament, but the school managed to put up another game for us. In the last 10 minutes before the game, we were told that we were playing the APAC TEAM once again. An my small eyes opened big and my teeth showed from my smile. IT WAS WHAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! I was excited for another good game, and i know so was everyone on the team. During the warm-up i could see everyone doing really well, I was also hitting better than ever, ready to shut them up. Unfortunately 2 minutes left before the game, a ball comes flying to my hand, overextending my thumb after awhile it started swelling like crazy. I tapped it up and tried to play. When the ball came, i tried to receive but my hand couldn't close together and the ball would fly all of the place, I told coach to quickly sub me out. Rest of the game i was on the bench doing the everything else possible to help the team, which was cheering loud! It was a disappointment for me to not play with the team I've been waiting to play with again. But i enjoyed myself on the bench trying to make the best for my teammates and myself. I was very proud of them, we sealed their spikes VERY VERY well, frustrated them and almost took the 2nd set, our back row wasn't as alert as the first game but overall it was still a enjoyable game. After the game, coach pointed some things out about our games that day, and overall is was good, we just need confidence and keep receiving and eventually everything will come along. He said one more thing, about me not being careful with my hand, i thought it was nonsense because it was a total accident, but then i thought about it again that he was right, its my job as an athlete to not play well but also take care of my body no matter under whatever circumstances. ISAC in a week and half! I hope i recover very soon! This next week i shall take extra good care of my hand, and be ready for our final tournament.

Raise the bar

Coming back from Hong Kong we are now very clear on what we need to work on. The teams were easy, and from watching, we were obviously above their level but once on the court we were all different players, we started playing THEIR game, trailing behind, giving easy points, standing and watching the ball land in our faces. Coach was disappointed at our games even at the ones we won, we were not focusing and not going for every ball, during the finals it was all about the mental game. From the way we played, I could see that we gave up too easily, were always in a hurry to get the rally over, so we can put down the pressure on our shoulders, however that's not the way to enjoy volleyball, more so to win! Before we correct anything we need to change our attitude.
I can see that everyone was doing better in practice yesterday, when all the pressure has gone away, there were no more holding back, but just good old fun subic volleyball. However we need to bring this spirit into our games, no more throwing of tantrums(specifically myself), every fault is the teams fault. We need to function as a team.
Our game with major major, a very very experienced and strong team, today was awfully played, we lost all 5 sets, which in my opinion we could've won atleast 2 sets. A habit of our team is, once we start doing good, we lose focus, and get playful, and when we do bad, we become quiet and hold back a lot, therefore not being able to execute plays. We need to build this court confidence like what we have in practice, and we need to build consistency. It's time we raise the bar, and play to our potential. To achieve this we need to have the mindset to improve to excel.
One thing i realized is that my role ain't the same as last year's, and this is something i need to adjust to. As captain and main spiker, I need to do my job by being my consistent, become reliable and a team motivator. This weeks practice is crucial for us getting out of this slump we've fell into, we need to hurry up and clean up our act before ISAC comes.

One Mistake, One Game

3 Weeks of volleyball done, and we had our 2nd home game against a team from olongapo on friday just 2 days ago. Our team expected a win this time, because this team was way smaller than us, and weaker compared to last week's team. In the 1st set, we struggled the first 5 points, trying to get our rhythm going, but once we got it we caught up and took the lead, and with very very good floor coverage and momentum we took the first set. Our first set was the most amazing receiving game I've ever encountered, and with these good receives they couldn't score on us and we could easily set up beautiful plays to score on them. With this said, coach T played the 2nd team for the 2nd set, although they lost the set, i could see improvement and a little bit better court movement, but there faces were still the same as last week. The quiet, still, worried, nervous, scared to make a mistake face, as a veteran player the team, i could totally relate to them when i used to be like that, the more you think about making a mistake, the more you will make it. Just enjoy the game, have confidence to receive the ball, set the ball and SPIKE that ball. But I can see that they're heading there, so i tried my best to relax them and help them enjoy, by cheering really loud, and slowly i could see their smiles and enjoyment and that's volleyball! 3rd set started, coach put me back in, it wasn't the starting 6, it was a mixture, and I used this chance to try and help other teammates on the court, motivating them, telling them to get low, hands up ready for blocking and SMILE. Our receiving was bad, so we were trailing behind, trying to stick with them and catch up. During the 2nd rotation, I did a good block from open, and ball landed straight down onto their court, and out of no where i cheered really loud and starting dancing, AS SOON AS FINISHED DANCING I instantly regretted, before that, I just wanted to bring up the teams momentum, but then I know what i did was really really bad sportsmanship, my face turned straight, and everyone else on the team were laughing, everyone but the coach... At that instance i knew i disappointed him, and I had no idea how i could take back what I've done already. I started getting emotional, a bit ashamed of myself, and i could see the other team starring at me, looking in a bad way, i embarrassed myself, the team, my coach, and my school, that's what went through my head the rest of the game. I just didn't know what to do in the rest of the game after that, the team turned quiet and our momentum died, i sat down after the set disappointed, the rest of the sets went messy, although we managed to win the last set, in which they did not even play serious about anymore, it still wasn't as good as the first one.
One I've learned in the game was that, learn to keep your composure, and this is what I've been trying to learn since last year, but it still got back to me after my BIG BIG mistake, because i've always pride myself for good sportsmanship, and what i did that day, was unacceptable, and a bad role model. Despite all this, I've recovered from it, and have been inspiring and motivating myself watching volleyball videos all weekend, and am SUPER SUPER excited for our tournament in hong kong, and again A STRONG team this year!

2011 First Volleyball Game

On August 19, we had our volleyball team's first official game of the season. Many of us have been excited since the beginning of the week and we were ready to put what we've practiced on the court. During warm-up I noticed our team was although big but somehow more lively this year, which normally wouldn't be because people would just be doing their own thing.
When the game started I could see my teammates faces all turned serious and i could see their nervousness kick in. Surprisingly, I was feeling the same thing they were, mostly because everyone was quiet and our starters were frustrated because we were letting them score from our mistakes. We lost by losing 3 straight sets, but the game continued and we played a full 5 sets. The starters went back in on the 4th set and coach especially informed us to win this set. We were leading but it was still very messy, we ended winning the set by just 4 points. The last set, coach put in another new batch, and we gave the set away as well. In the end although we lost, our team was still a new team with lots of potential, we had some nice sets and spikes, we just need more court experience and a better understanding of where to move. From what I've seen, we have just need to fix some little problems, and then we will be where we want to be and execute our full potential. This year team will be a strong and solid team.

CAS Activity Proposal Form

Student’s
Name William Ou
Supervisor’s Name Mr. Tolentino

Year 12
Activity Name Boys Varsity Volleyball

Date(s) / Duration of Activity August - October

What is my past experience with this activity?
I’ve been trying out for the varsity team nearly every year since the 6th grade. Last year was my first time to be on the official ISAC team. Last year I specialized as a open hitter, because it is the position I play best, but I have a very flat spike in which the spike is strong but very inaccurate and often goes out of bound. However our team managed to take 1st runner up in our biggest tournament, ISAC.

What new learning or skill do I hope to pick up or develop?
I will continue to learn how to clip better, so I can put in spin in my hit to make the ball go down. I also want to continue practicing my shoot spike in which I have been trying out since last year. Offense is important but defense is more important, I want to be more consistent at receiving because a good set always comes from a good receive. A new skill I would like to develop this though, is the jump serve.

How will this experience be different from that of the past?
This experience will be different to me this year because I will now play as a veteran and also as a senior. I am guessing that this would impact me in a positive way by motivating more and playing harder on the court and have never give up mind set.

How am I going to know if I am making progress in achieving the goal/s I have set?
When my spikes start going where I want it on the court, then I know my offense is getting better, also if my receives goes to the hitter and that I don’t still and watch the ball land then my receiving would be better. Most importantly if our whole team is enjoying the game, I know that not only I am making progress but me as well.
Goals What is/are your goal/s for this activity? What do you hope to achieve?
ISAC 2011 Champions, have a top-spin spike, master the “shoot”, be more alert in receiving, establish a threatening jump serve or serve, work well with teammates and have a good team spirit

Impact Who will benefit from this activity? How?
Me and my teammates because it is it will develop our individual skills and will make us learn and experience true sportsmanship and hard work. Coaches and the school in general would be impacted as well, because we are a varsity team that represents our school, the better we perform the prouder our school.

Timeline Where, how often, and for how long will the activity take place? (specific dates whenever possible)
Every School day(Monday-Friday) After school 4pm - 5:30pm

CAAT CAS Reflection

Overall, this activity was probably one of the shortest but definitely impacted me the most. In the beginning I wanted to volunteer because bio and med are some of my passions, I thought it’d be interesting to see what they do since it’s in the similar field, and I could also write it for my CAS, kill two birds with one stone. I knew that the organization was for a good cause, and so I knew I could get a positive feedback. 2 years ago, I volunteered at The First Social Welfare Foundation, an organization also in Taipei that provides education to the mentally disabled. That was my first time I came in contact with people who suffer inconvenient conditions, having a hard time just surviving, but more so surviving in society, from judgments and adulthood responsibilities(getting a job, etc.). I was 14 back then, I fed some of the kids, help move them around, do errands for the teacher and also played around with some of them(who have better conditions). My mind opened up ever since, I had felt something from those children and had some thoughts to myself, but wasn’t thinking too much after awhile, although it did get me more interested. This time I volunteered for CAAT, the Ice Breaker Team, my job in the two days were to just assemble and re-equip some devices they use to help the physically disabled. What I did was really nothing and all those devices were interesting because they were formed by many brilliant ideas the group came up with, but that wasn’t the most impressive, what really hit me the most was WHY they did it, their motives and their intentions for doing such things. One of their members, Mr. Lin showed me some of the videos and pictures of their cases while explaining me the reasons and why they do all this. As I was watching, I was in urge of tearing up from how much I was touched by. I always knew that, yeah, every life is important and no one life values more than another, but I’ve never really experienced that thought, and at that moment I finally knew what it meant. Mr. Lin said, no matter how severe the condition is we want them to know that there can still be a chance, and not have them be looked down upon and judged by in society. He told me that this type of business will never make money, but they do it because of the positive feedbacks they receive from each patient and each case. I look up to what they do and have done, compared to 2 years, I now can perceive the insights behind and value their efforts more. I’ve been feeling extraordinarily good these days, maybe from listening and being around these great people, and have learned that sometimes when you feel down, when something bad happens, just tell yourself, it ain’t THAT BAD, just accept it, change it if you could, and don’t get too down about it, because there are bigger problems than that, and that there’s always a solution. The other thing I learned from seeing what the team does, is that not only items can bring us happiness. An Iphone is 30,000 pesos, a house or nice car could be millions, but making life possible and putting hope and a smile on someone’s face is priceless.

Reflection: Student Council 2010-2011

During the speeches candidates always seem promising, and last year i thought i would be promising. Unfortunately when I finally got my hands on the job, it wasn't as easy as it seemed. Being treasurer wasn't just managing money, keeping count of the money transactions, but more than that. Being part of the council required brainstorming, constructing proposals through careful planning, organization and collaboration with others. All this tied together is what makes the purpose of a council. At first I thought it was just collecting money, and keeping it safe. At first it was easy, but once numbers got bigger and the money going in and out occurred more frequent, you start to lose track of things and you thought things were easy, and all of sudden you realize you really need to note down things, I learned a lot from my advisor dealing with money managing. Besides from this, the most important thing i learned is that always go through careful careful planning! Over the school year, we've had failures and mistakes in our projects which could have easily been avoided but are caused due to carelessness. Joining the student council was definitely a learning experience for me, although i may not have the honors to do it again next year because unelected, but these skills I've learn I can now use and can be handy to me in real life situations for the rest of life.

Reflection: Lower School Soccer Club

Overall, the lower school soccer club was a worthwhile activity, definitely did not waste any of my Saturday afternoons. In all honestly, after i agreed to be part of this, i was afraid to take on the commitment because i was afraid i would do bad. One big problem that I've always had is that it's hard for me to do anything that has no rules or guidelines, and in the soccer club, i was the "coach" i had to take initiative! The truth is, if you have no idea what you're doing, the kids know too! And they will start fooling around, ignoring you, doing their own thing. One thing that i learned to catch their attention is by putting up games, because kids are competitive and they don't like boring drills over and over, they just get bored and lose focus. Knowing the fact that they like competition, i also had to make teams and rules fair, or they would seriously seriously get frustrated and unhappy, and you DO NOT want a crying kid that will hate you SO MUCH. But luckily, when kids hate you, it's only momentarily.
The most enjoying part for me, was seeing kids with good sportsmanship, like little adults, shaking hands after a game, and helping up a fellow opponent, and most of all, watching them play hard on the field, no worries, no nothing, just pure soccer. And thats one thing that i think we, as teenagers and some adults should learn from kids, their innocence and ignorance, because sometimes its just better not worrying or caring so much.
The first few days at the club, i was still struggling how to get these kids attention, but once i got a hang of it, i enjoyed it, and when you really get the hang of it, you suddenly feel like a kid as well, just enjoying every moment, and being carefree. The truth is we will and always be forever young.
Lastly, i finally understand why they say the kids are our future, and potential to make the world a better place because their mind have not been influenced but has the capability to, so we should provide them with good influence and good education and thats what I've learned the most.

April 30th: Lower School Soccer Club

On the last day of April, after a stressful week and a tiring day, playing badminton from 8am to 3pm, i had my 4th appearance at the Lower school soccer club, in which somehow i was looking forward to the whole week, because i had such a fun time the last session. 3 days before the club, i asked mr.wyncoll, how can i get the kids to listen to me, when they're just fooling around doing their own thing? he told me, "kids love competition, so try to make some games, and they'll be more interested, also try to search up some drills to do, and encourage them more"(somewhere along those lines). So yesterday, i was assigned to the station, focusing on ball control, I let them do dribbling exercises, dribbling across cones and back. I let try it a few times, then i told them we're having a competition and i split them to two groups, the first group to finish dribbling through the cones win, but i realized the teams were unfair, the less skilled team didn't even bother to try, i didn't what to do next, but then the whistle blew shortly(thankfully), or else i would've felt bad, letting them do nothing. The next group came, they were 3 girls, around 1st grade, 2nd grade. So i changed the game, a little bit different, i said the three of them go against me! i do it 3 times while each of them just do it once, losers have to do sprints. But half way through, the whistle blew, so unfortunately, we had to end it. But the best part of the the club came, which were the games! My team had 4 kids, 2 boys 2 girls, and they're ALL VERY ATHLETIC. I put that in caps, because they were AMAZING. Before the game, we had a team huddle, i told them to spread around, and pass more, i had they're fastest player play defense, and told them defense is more important than offense, because kids normally have a misconception that scoring is more important. And so that was our game plan, and i told them that we should have a team name, and they came up with the "Chameleons" , and so "1,2,3, CHAMELEONS!" and the game began. Our team played really good offense and which us score a lot of points, no one was standing alone doing nothing, all of them contributed and they were running for the ball all the time. Our defense was unbelievable, when the other team gets the ball we all run back and play defense, we had a couple of big kicks that cleared our area. The highlight of the day was though, when the other team was open just a meter away from the goal, and shoots, Nicholas from grade 1, dashes to the ball and slide tackles the ball and denies it from the going in! That was the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen, I barely even see that in professional soccer! At the end of the game, we finished with a 5-3 astonishing win! Jacob, a 2nd grader, who i am fairly close with because our basketball team had 2nd grade buddies that we spend lunches with and wrote to, i called him MVP, because he scored all 5 points for us, and he was happy and i can see that he was more motivated to play.
My thoughts at the end of the day was: ya, this was tiring after such a long and hot day, but it was worth it, this fun was good because it was guilt free, and we were helping while having fun at the same time. The best part of this club was working with the kids, because kids are so emotional(although they move on pretty fast), and they're simple and it gives me a break from my stressful high school, teenage life, I feel simple just like them. Joining this club is a double win for me, im giving and having fun at the same time. I look forward to the next session!

Boys Varsity Basketball: Reflection

This year's varsity basketball season impacted me a lot, because this season meant a lot to me. It was my time to finally come out of my shell, it was my time to show what I can do in this sport. Basketball has always been my favorite sport since in an elementary student. 2 years ago, during my 9th grade year, i was unfortunately unable to do sports, i missed my chance and last year i was cut right before isac. This year, to me, was the first time that i didn't feel out of place on the team. This forced me to learn faster because it was easier for me to execute what i can do. This season especially, i learned that being good at a sport like basketball, takes more than just simply trying hard in practice, because practice hours isn't enough if you want to excel, you must do conditioning on yourself, shoot a lot, watch basketball games to boost your basketball IQ. Being guard of the team wasn't easy work. Us guards took control of the team.

Our team this year, in my opinion, had the most potential compared to our teams in the past years. This year's team was really new, new teammates, new coach, and "new"bies. Last year's ISAC team had 5 seniors, which meant 5 new players had to take their spot(including myself). We were low in experienced players this year, so in the beginning of the season, a lot came to tryout, most of them were completely new in basketball, the ones who found interest in the sport and were eager to learn, stayed in the team. Our team learned and improved very quickly in just a span of around less than 2 months. We started from not even knowing where to stand during free throws, and not even knowing how to pass, dribble and do a simple layup, to becoming able to box-out, grab rebounds, break presses(even though not that well), and executing plays. On the first day of ISAC, we were all confident and excited to win some games! Our first game was with Brent Manila, a young team, but challenging, the first half went smooth, we executed our plays, and held their team down, but once we started getting turnovers in the second half, we let go, and let them take the win. The same thing happened throughout the our games. One thing i learned was that it was all up to ourselves and our mind set, because we knew we could do I already. But we weren't tough enough.
This ISAC meant a lot to me, it was my first basketball ISAC, the one where I've been striving for since grade 6. Before our team left for ISAC, many teachers came and greeted me good luck, and some of them asked me about my hip that was operated on just 2 years ago. I smiled and said, its all good, better than ever. This reminded me of the times when it happened, I was willing to give give up anything to be back in the court, when I came back to school, I would go watch the team practice in my crutches, i felt jealous of all those healthy people, i was eager to play, and that feeling came back to me, and i said to myself that I will play my heart out. After the first day was over in ISAC, i was extremely tired, and i passed on the bed, shivering, as soon as you know it, i was having a fever. Both me and my roommate, Adam, thought i was just too tired, and so thats what i told myself. This continued, until ISAC was over, only when i was playing my fever would go away, i thought it was maybe the adrenaline rush or something. At the end of the tournament, i realized little spots on my body and arm, I realized i got measles!!!

Although we lost, i was still proud of our team because we played clean and we respected every team. And even though losing to team we weren't suppose to lose, we still weren't sore losers, to me that was the most important, especially as an athlete, you have to respect yourself, your teammates, coaches, referees, and most importantly, your opponents.

Boys Varsity Basketball

Our basketball team is finally coming to the last stride. Our Baguio 10 Team has already been chosen, baguio this weekend and then isac 2 weeks after that! The season just keeps getting more and more exciting! Since the start, we've had 2 games, the first game we lost really badly and the second time we lost by around 10 which was much better, but for both games, i think we couldve done better. Our main problem is our turnover rate, in which we lost many points from. Our team needs to make better and sure passes, we lost position many times from bad passes. Our defense needs better communication and not defend smart, challenge shots. For both offense and defense, i think we need better court vision. About my personal progress, my jump shots have improved greatly, i just need to shoot more in games. I need to improve in my ball handling skills and have higher confidence bringing down the ball. My defense is decent, but I'd like to be more intimidating to the other team, and cause them turnovers.

Saturday Soccer Club

The Lower School soccer club has started since 3 weeks ago.. Watching these kids play reminded me of myself back in the days. I could totally relate what's going on with them, and see things about kids i never noticed when i was their age. One thing I've learned is that teaching takes a lot of patience, especially teaching kids. When playing sports with kids, keep in mind ONE THING, BE FAIR! I remembered as a kid, being fair was such a big thing to me, so it made sense to me seeing those kids taking the games so serious, even if they were just sitting around doing nothing, THEY WANT TO WIN! Mr.Wyncoll said something that i thought made a lot of sense, ENCOURAGE THEM at all times! Kids really appreciate encouragement, they want to know when they're doing good, and from knowing pushes them to keep doing what they're doing. The worst thing you can do is lose a kids confidence.

ISAC@Subic Student Council Jan 19-22

School last week was really busy. Events and activities filled up everyone's schedule. The ISAC competition attracted many people into our school. Us, the student council, spotted this attraction, so we decided to make use of this opportunity and brainstormed about some fundraiser ideas. I came up with the idea of selling toiletries and the idea expanded, we ended up having a student council sari sari store! I also came up with an idea to collect recyclables, I knew there was going to be a lot of trash, and even trash is money, we wanted to try to make the most out of this event. The day when ISAC started, it was very frustrating, busy but exciting at the same time. I felt rushed and pressured, then i realized that actually doing them, taking action and making things happen wasnt as easy and simple as coming up with the ideas, actually doing them was harder than saying it. That first morning when ISAC began, as i recall, I hated it. The day before, I went to buy our candies and stuff we were selling with ms.pascual, and then went to my dad's company to get some boxes for our recyclables. So the first few days, i felt like i was going most of the work, i came to school early, organized, taped our boxes and placed it. The heat was adding into my stress, then sprite spilled on my shirt, then I just totally lost my temper and totally flipped out. Then I calmed myself the next few days. At the end it all turned out, "alright". The sari sari store was a good idea, we made a couple thousand. Our recycling plan turned out to be a total disaster! The first day, our trash were all taken away and dumped somewhere else. Then on the last day, all our trash were gone again.. so we just forgot about it. In conclusion, our advisor, Ms.Pascual has been really disappointed at our efforts. I think she's right, we must take these things more seriously, we must live up to our duties and responsibilities!
